Keeping up with patio maintenance can reduce problems later on, so it is important to know what needs to be done in order to keep your patio beautiful.

Many people will toss plants and other items onto their patio, and then forget about them until a problem sets in. Since your patio is an extension of your backyard is it important to do patio maintenance in order to avoid everyday problems.

One of the first things you should do is inspect the patio for any potential problems which will include looking for cracks in the foundation, and structural problems that could worsen as the seasons change. If the space was properly set up, there shouldn’t be any issues at all. However, if the concrete or brick wasn’t properly handled you may need to fix these problems before they turn into a major concern.

Here are some routine maintenance tasks:

  • Remove all debris from screens or covers every few weeks. Leaves and other debris can become heavy when ignored and can cause damage to covers.
  • Replace/repair screens or covers as needed – you can do this once every few weeks or after a storm and avoid most of the typical patio problems.
  • Make sure you are cleaning your gutters regularly. With a glove on simply run your hand along the gutters a few times each month (or after a storm) to make sure they are clear. Clogged gutters can cause water to pool which can cause ice in the winter, and potentially lead to rot.
  • Prune your trees and bushes around the patio, it takes just a few minutes and will give you peace of mind. While they might not be an issue now, in a few months those stray branches and leaves can make using the porch difficult. If they are ignored long enough, they can grow into the patio and home and that can lead to structural damage.
  • Cleaning all concrete to remove dirt buildup, debris, and to reduce the risk of slipping. This can be done with a broom at least once a week, or you can hose it down if it needs a little extra care. Doing this will ensure a visually impressive space with a reduced number of associated risk.

One other important thing to do is to treat your deck annually. Between the sun and the weather, there is the possibility that you will experience warping and other forms of damage to your deck. It is important to take the time to apply a coat of sealer to the deck every year. Doing this will extend the life of your porch, allowing you to spend more time lounging on it instead of being forced to spend time repairing the damage that could occur. A porch that has been well taken care of, especially with the above-mentioned maintenance tips, can be enjoyed it all year round.
